“Good evening to everyone who has joined us today. This is the happiest day of my life, and I want to thank each of you for sharing it with us.
And so first I want to say some special words for the people who helped to create this day.
Those of you who know me -and that’s most of you- know that I’ve been dreaming of my wedding day since I was about five years old. I know I’m not the only one in this room who took some of her mother’s old lingerie and wrapped it around her head and pretended it was a wedding veil. I can even remember using Mom’s feather duster for a bouquet a few times.
To my dad and mother, I want to thank you both for giving me [helping me to have] this wonderful wedding day, something that I’ve dreamed of my whole life. And I want to thank you for raising me, and teaching me your values, and for always paying the phone bill, because we all know I couldn’t have survived without that!
Grandma, I treasure this [piece of jewellery, handkerchief] that you loaned me today for my “something old,” because I know that it has been touched by the magic you learned throughout your life, and that it will rub off on me and help me in the future ahead.
I also want to give my thanks to [Dagwood and Blondie], because I’m so lucky to have [you guys, the two of you] for a new set of parents. You have both been incredibly kind and generous to me, and I know I will seek your guidance many times over the years ahead. [Blondie], I already need your [lasagna recipe, advice on decorating]. I want you to know that I love your son very much, and I will do my best to be a wonderful wife for him.
[Dastina], thank you so much for being a patient and loving maid of honor. I know I’ve been hard to live with over the past three weeks as all the wedding plans were being finalised. You are one of the most fantastic women I know, and [Sweetie, Girlfriend], you know I owe you big time. Thank you for getting me to the [altar, wedding day] in one piece today.
I also have to recognise everything that my bridesmaids did. [Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather], you [both, all] look absolutely beautiful, too, and you know I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
So what is next? I’m thinking that once this day of celebration is over and everything gets back to normal, I will wake up to a new reality. That reality is that this wonderful man and I have joined our fates together to create a new future. And I wonder, what will we create? Family values are something that we both treasure. I think it will be an honor to each of our families as we take the best that is in each of us and create a new family of our own.
(For religious beliefs) – [We’re going to work toward our mutual goals, and we will try to keep God in the fabric of our lives as we move ahead.]
We’re going to be arguing about what colors to paint that house [Abner] mentioned, and whether to get a cat instead of a dog, and what names to give our kids.
But most of all, [Abner], I want to thank you for marrying me. It’s true that you are my Prince Charming, but there is so much more to our relationship than that. We promised today that we will love and honor each other on good days and on bad days, and in sickness and in health.
All of those days will be leading us into a future that neither of us can see, [Abner], but I know they will be bright and shining as long as we’re together. [Abner], [to quote the poet Robert Browning],
“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” [Toast]”
